One of Only Eight Illinois Companies to Make List Four or More Times

– InstallShield® Software Corp., the leader in Internet-ready software installation and distribution solutions, has been named one of the fastest-growing companies in the country by Inc. magazine, which today released its annual ranking of the Inc. 500, the comprehensive guide to America’s fastest-growing private companies. This marks the fourth consecutive year InstallShield has been named to this prestigious list. InstallShield is ranked 431 and is one of only eight Illinois-based companies to have earned inclusion on the list four or more times.
The Inc. 500, published on October 17th, is an exclusive report on the companies and CEOs who are changing the face of American business. Noteworthy alumni include such household corporate names as Microsoft, Timberland, Dominos Pizza and Patagonia.

Continued industry recognition as the acknowledged de facto standard for installing Windows-based software was only one element fueling InstallShield’s growth. InstallShield maintained its market dominance in the software installation/setup arena. The company rounded out its offerings with more complete solutions for customers including software, support, training and professional services. Its software was used on hundreds of millions of desktops around the world, while the top 100 of Software Magazine’s “Software 500” list trusted InstallShield to deliver their digital goods. InstallShield also continued beyond the Windows platform, partnering with industry leaders IBM and Sun Microsystems to successfully introduce a multi-platform installation solution.
InstallShield is one of only 27 firms in the state of Illinois to have made this year’s list. A look at the Inc. 500 by sector indicates that the computer software and services sector dominates the rankings (38 percent of the 500). Other sectors represented on this year’s list include: diversified services (17 percent), materials and construction (6 percent) and telecommunications (6 percent).
This marks the 19th year that Inc. has charted the progress of America’s most innovative and successful entrepreneurs. To be eligible for the Inc. 500, companies have to be independent and privately held through 1999, have at least $200,000 in sales in the base year, 1995, and their 1999 sales must have exceeded their 1998 sales. The ranking is based on the percentage increase in sales from 1995 through 1999. Holding companies, regulated banks and regulated utilities are not eligible. Inc. verified all information using tax forms and financial statements from certified public accountants and by conducting interviews with company officials.
